Abstract
The orientalists have been writing on Islam, Orient and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) for a good many centuries. It is very unfortunate, however that Islam and the Prophet of Islam have been the most misunderstood ones in the western intellectual sphere. The Prophet has been maligned shamelessly and has been dubbed as impostor and the "renegade cardinal" etc. etc. and the Holy Quran merely a book of borrowings from the earlier revealed religions i.e., Judaism and Christianity. Abdul Majid Daryabadi, taking stock of some positive contributions of the Orientalists has also explicated the real nature of Orientalism, coloured as it is with centuries-old prejudices, misgivings and misunderstandings of the West regarding Islam and the Holy Prophet. He is of the view that beneath the shining veneer of the orientalistic writings, lies the dark picture, portrayed in somber and dismal colours to tarnish not only the unique personality of the Prophet but also to sow the seeds of dissension in a subtle manner among the Muslim Ummah on basis of colour, creed or nationalism etc. etc. Darayabadi has goaded the ulema of the Muslim Ummah to rise against the mighty challenges of the orientalists and try to combat the prejudices and the misgivings regarding Islam and the Prophet of Islam. This according to Darayabadi, calls for concerted efforts on the part of the ulema and intellectuals of the Ummah to highlight the real face of Islam and the Prophet which is, of course, nothing but a blessing par excellence for the whole of humanity.
