Abstract
There are many genres in Pashto poetry. Among them one is Qita. It is said that it is a part of encomium and poets started writing it in isolation. Actually, it is an independent genre. It is found in the classical Pashto literature. Initially it can be traced to a translation of a Qita by Abu Hashim Sarwani who translated a Qita of his teacher. Pashto literature has imported and adopted this genre from Arabic literature. This article deals with the etymology, historical background and evolution of Qita in Pashto literature.
