Abstract
Baltistan is a place situated between the Himalayas and Karakorum ranges. This area is populated of Tibetan origin people. Balti, a branch of Tibetan language, is spoken here. In ancient time, Baltistan had religious, social and trade relations with real Tibet (Lhasa) and Tibet Kalan (Ladakh). With the advent of Islam in the 14th century, these relations came to an end. Under Islamic influence, Arabic and Persian languages were introduced here and Balti language remained under the influence of Arabic and Persian languages till 1840 AD. Maharaja Gulab Singh of Jamu conquered Baltistan in 1840 AD and Dogra Dynasty continued for over a century till 1948 AD. In the era of the Dogras, Urdu was introduced for the first time and the Baltis became familiar with it. When Pakistan came in to being, Baltistan developed its relations with Pakistan in different fields of life. In this way, Urdu made itself popular among the common people as well. media, educational institutions and employees (from other cities) played a vital role in promoting Urdu. In this dissertation, I have tried to explain the beginning and historical evolution of Urdu in Baltistan in a nutshell.
