Sanctity of Human life, "Euthanasia”, Buddhism and Islam: a Comparative Study

Sanctity of human life is much valued in all religions of the world as human
being is the central and most precious figure in society. The society is
established only for the welfare and advancement of human beings. Buddhism
and Islam both emphasize on the sanctity of human life. Islam not only
acknowledges human as the most honourable of all creatures but also gives
him the position of caliph of the world. Islam drastically stresses on the
sanctity of human life. Killing of people is prohibited in Islam weather it is in
shape of killing, suicide, abortion or euthanasia .The teaching of Buddha have
also given importance to sanctity of human life. According to the philosophy of
non-violence (Ahimsa) in Buddhism, every living creature’s life is sacred and
the life of human beings is equal to that of all other living things. That is why
Buddhism is even against the killing of insects. In Buddhism, “The
nonviolence is one of the five precepts of Dhamma, which form the right
action, right views and right thinking on Eightfold Path.This article focuses on
the teaching of Buddhism and Islam, a comparative study regarding
euthanasia because it is closely related to the sanctity of human life.
