This essay traces the similarities in the syntax and morphology of the Urdu and Hindi languages. Numerous examples are quoted to support the thesis. It is maintained that, sharing eighty percent of the vocabulary and most of the rules of syntax and morphology, these languages are similar in their origin and far closer to each other than to Persian (in the case of Urdu) and Sanskrit (in the case of Hindi).
