Use of Numbers in Sachal Sarmast’s Poetry

In this article attempt has been made to show that the classical poet of Sindh, Sachal Sarmast was not only a creative artist
but he had a natural talent of using similies and metaphors in a
befitting manner. Most of the poets of the world have used similies of beautiful flowers, natural beauty of the celestial bodies like
the moon and the stars, or even abstract things like light, smell of
a flower etc. Sacal Sarmast has also used these similies but he has
used a very unique form of describing different aspects of the universe, the various concepts, situations and even emotions with the
help of numbers or the numericals.
In this regard the poetry of this great poet of 18th century
has been studied to find examples of such usage.
The concept of oneness of God, The negation of the concept of “dui” or inclusion of a second being with God; the importance of the 14th night of the moon (full moon) and the unlimited
(infinity) of the different qualities of the creator of the universe,
are a few examples which show usage of numbers in his poetry.
The conclusion, thus, is that the poet has an exceptional
talent with which he can use his imagination for enumerating the
poetical variations in his poetry in which these numbers carry
meanings different from their literal or numerical values.
