The present study aimed at investigating the relationship of parenting
styles with oppositional behaviour of school going children. It was
hypnotized that authoritative parenting style will be negatively while
authoritarian and permissive parenting styles will be positively related to
oppositional behaviour (reported by mother and teacher separately) of
school going boys. The study was based on correlational research design.
The participants included teachers and parents of 55 school going boys.
The oppositional behaviour was measured by Child and Adolescent
Disruptive Behaviour inventory (Burns, 2010) and parenting styles by
Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (Robinson, Mandelco,
Olsen, & Hart, 2001). Correlation analysis indicated a significant positive
relationship of authoritarian and permissive parenting styles of both
parents with child oppositional defiant behaviour toward adults and
toward sibling as reported by mothers; however, correlations for teacher
reported behaviour and parenting styles were not significant. It was
concluded that parenting styles have relationship with boys’ oppositional
behaviour especially in home settings
