Hyderabad is an ancient and historical city of Sindh as well as an intellectual hub of Sindh in past and in contemporary times, too. This city enjoys on edge over other cities of Sindh because of its rich literary and cultural background and traditions as well. Besides Sindhi language, the literary environment of Hyderabad has nourished very tradition of Urdu prose and poetry. Urdu emerged as a prominent language of Sindh during the Kalhora government (1777-1783 A.D). After words, both Kalhora and Talpur rulers of Sindh, not only patronized Urdu but promoted it along with other languages of Sindh. They organized literary activities/events like multilingual mushairas during their regime mainly at Hyderabad. When British conquered Sindh, the literary activities went on with the same pace and potential. This article includes in itself historical background of Hyderabad coupled with a review on the poetry of 41 prominent poets of the city, who rendered poetry in Urdu, took part in literary activities held at that time and, thus, played their practically possible role in the development of Urdu language in pre-partition times.
