This essay is a comparative study of two poets Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai and John Donne, and highlights the similarities and diversities between their poetical work. Both of these poets lived in the age of political, social and religious unrest. John Donne is a metaphysical poet, which refers to a "beyond physical" approach. Metaphysical poetry is enriched with spiritual philosophy which deals with three subjects such as love, death and religious fervour. Metaphysical poet have used different techniques in their poetry . They use metaphors, conceits and similes to express their ideas differently. On the other hand, Sufi poetry deals with themes such as love, separation and religion. Sufi poets use a wide range of imagery, symbols and comparisons with nature and ordinary life. The difference between Shah and Donne is on the basis of technique and style. John Donne expresses his ideas in a intricate way by giving examples from science, astronomy, mathematics and cosmology while Shah Abdul Bhitai uses skill of language in a simplest and convincing style in such a way that it can move the reader's heart. Both the poets are unique in their art of expression. They depict life from their minute observations. John Donne defines an enigma of love by giving examples. He considers body as a gateway from lovers can enter into a world of souls. In the same way, Shah moves from physical to spiritual love all the while explaining the philosophy of love. He travels from physical love to absolute reality and physical longings turn into divine love. Furthermore, in this essay, terms such as metaphysical , mysticism and Tassawuf have been defined clearly. These three dimensions of thoughts are similar in feelings, ideas and thoughts, while the difference is the cultural and environmental background. Their techniques are absolutely diverse and unique. The themes of love, death and religion are same, however, the ways of interpretations are different. 20 ڪالچي تحقيقي جرنل Journal Research Kalachi Metaphysical poetry is related to philosophy. It is based on realism, logic, observations and analytical approach, while Tassawuf is described in the reflection of religion and spiritualism. The knowledge of Tassawuf is related to intuitive observations which are based on subjective approach relying on objective knowledge. Mystic poetry or Sufi thinking deals with unusual themes and comprehensions beyond explicit thinking. Both the poets define love in a different way. In John Donne's poetry, for example, women appear emotionally weak and disloyal while Shah Latif's portrayal of women is admirable. He portrayed women as strong characters who represent the love of soil and kins equally. According to Shah Latif, women are born to share love, faith and consolation among humanity. He represents their characters as brave and courageous and as someone who would never compromise with the wrong and injustice.
