Mineralogical composition of clay fraction may give an indication of the parent material, the soil has developed on, and also the different minerals these parent materials are likely to contribute to the clay
fraction of a soil. To study this, soil samples from three different sites (Caernarfon, Penmon, and Ueiniog) were collected throughout the profiles. These soils were characterised by being developed on glacial
till, calcareous in nature. Bulk clay (<2/jm) was collected by centrifugation, saturated with K+ and Mg+2 ions separately, and clay mounts were prepared by spreading the clay-water suspension on glass slides. Clay mounts saturated with K+ and Mg+2 ions were
subjected to heat (3SOX! and 550°C) and ethylene glycol/glycerol treatments respectively. After the diagnostic treatments, samples were
run on X-ray diffractometer (PW 1050/23). Mica, vermiculite and kaolinite were found as dominant clay minerals with minor amounts of smectite and chlorite in all the three soils. It was concluded that the clay
mineralogies of these soils have been inherited from the original parent material of till, i.e. Carboniferous sandstone, or contributing rocks, i.e. S
