Water samples were collected on monthly, bimonthly and quarterly basis in between Rakh and Jhang canal up to the river Chenab along five plains *(N,S,M,F and K), from Aug. 1978 to Aug. 1979 and Nov. 1982 to Nov. 1983. These water samples were analysed for their chemical parameters. Based upon chemical analysis, three different zones of water quality were marked in the project area. General trend of improvement of water quality from Rakh canal towards river Chenab was observed; Evaporation impact was distinguished throughout the project area along Paharang drain. The generally held theory on the source of salt "Leakage From Saline Seeps" is disproved and we propose an alternate theory concerning the origin of these salts. Results indicated rainfall as major and seepage from canals minor source affecting the fluctuation of present ground water table. *N,S,M,F & K refer to Narwala Road, Sargodha Road, Millat Road, FDA & Khan Mohammad Road, plains respectively
