تلخیص
Dictatorial regimes traditionally employ coercive measures to silence dissent. It creates fissures in the cultural, social and political fiber of the country. Consequently it leads to the emergence of resistance among the vibrant sections of the civil society. This article traces the emergence of resistance among the Pakistani painters during the dictatorial regime of General Zia ul Haq (1977-88). Various painters took to offering resistance through their artistic medium in an aesthetically rich manner characterized by symbolic expression of resistance in terms of craft and content of their paintings. Their artistic contribution paved way for socio-political resistance at a large scale, thus stifling the onslaught of dictatorial oppression.
