Sindhi and English belong to two sub branches of Indo-European language family; west-Germanic and Indo-Aryan. Sindhi speakers have remained
in contact with English for 175 years -directly during British rule (1843 A.D to
1947 A.D) and indirectly after 1947. Like other parts of the world, English enjoys the status of an official and prestigious language in Pakistan.
In the domain of Education, English has great importance. It is taught
mostly as a second language, from primary to tertiary level, in all over the
country, including Sindh. However, it has been observed that the native Sindhi
speakers find it difficult as a second language.
This research paper presents a brief comparative linguistic sketch of
English and Sindhi languages. The purpose of the study is to highlight the linguistic commonalities and differences between the two languages.
For this study, the content analysis method is applied on linguistic
structures i.e. phonetic sketch, descriptive morphology and syntax of the two
languages. The results have been drawn on the basis of linguistic commonalities and differences.
The analytical results clearly reveal that the Sindhi and English have
comparatively less linguistic commonalities, whereas, they have more differences in phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon. The native Sindhi speakers, especially students of different levels will be the prime beneficiaries of this
study.
