After the final conquest of India by the British, it was felt by the rulers that they should control the thought process of the Native population. Poetry was the main source of inspiration for the people. Ghazal was the most prominent medium of poetic expression. It was felt that the symbolic expression of the political content was almost impossible to curb. In order to popularize poem instead of Ghazals, The British patronized Natural Poetry. Altaf Hussain Hali, Muhammad Hussain Azad and other prominent and popular poets were asked to compose poems on different aspects of Nature. Consequently Musharas were arranged in which only poems on Natural Phenomena such as "A Rainy Day" were arranged. The main object of this shift of themes was to persuade the Poets to ignore the medium of Ghazl.
