Markhan Shaikhan was the first known poetess of Sindhi language.
She belonged to the Soomra period of Sindhi’s history. Her poetry was discovered and published by Muhammad Soomar Shaikh. She composed verses in the
praise of her Murshad Pir Karhio Bhandari. Her poetry is in the form of Sindhi folk songs (geech). These songs are composed in simple but figurative language. Along with reverence for the Murshid she has also showed love and
affection for her fellow Mureeds (disciples).
