Amir Syed Ali bin Shahab, famous as Syed Ali and Mir Syed Ali was a mystic, poet and author belonging to the Kubraviya Order and was the follower of Sheikh Najam Uddin Kubra in the eighth century. He was born on 12 Rajab in 714 Hijri in Hamadan and at the age of 73 he (died on 6, Zilhijjah in 786 Hijri.) while returning from Kashmir, on his way to Turkestan in Pakhly (Pakly) in the present Nuristan
Syed Ali Hamadani was a prolific traveller of his time; he began travelling at the age of 20 in 733 Hijri and continued for 21 long years till 753 Hijri. The lager part of Mir Syed Ali Hamadini’s life was spent on long journeys.
During his travel to Mecca, Medina, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Asia Minor, Central Asia, etc., he met different sets of people belonging to various cultures, religions and traditions and largely benefitted from visiting contemporary renowned scholars. The propagation and promotion of Islam was the most sanctified duty Hamadani has pursued during his travel. It is widely believed that he travelled the world three times. That is why, Mir Syed Ali Hamadani is considered as a great traveller from the Islamic world.
One of his great contributions was the promotion of Persian culture and language in the Indian sub-continent. Undoubtedly, Mir Syed Ali Hamadani has left outstanding works in prose and poetry in both Persian and Arabic languages covering spiritual, theological and literary topics. He had authority on both Persian and Arabic, but most of his works are in Persian.
One of his remaining works is the ‘collection of letters’ he had written to his friends, relatives and scholars of his time on several occasions. In this article, I have tried my best to evaluate, Mir Syed Ali Hamadani’s style of writing with its special features, and have presented a new face of Mir Syed Ali Hamadani in the light of his existing nineteen letters.
