Persian language had reached Bengal centuries ago through the sweet sounding poetic words of Khawaja Shams-ud-Din Muhammad Hafiz Sherazi (also known as Lisan-ul-Ghaib). Not only did the poets of India heartily accepted this beautiful language, but also did it rule the subcontinent as the official language for six and a half centuries. During this long period, Persian language mesmerised and won over the hearts of local people. The uniqueness of his wonderful poetry still continues to delight the people of Bengal.
The people of Bangladesh have always enjoyed immensely the words of great classic Persian poets, reading and listening to their poetic words. Persian influence on Bengali poetry and writing can be clearly observed. Appreciation for Persian language and literature, particularly research on classic Persian poets interested many Bangladeshis in the past. This interest still continues among the present generation.
Meer Syed Ali Hamdani is one of the greatest Persian personalities who have been declared an important figure in Bangladesh. Today, researchers and scholars in the universities in Bangladesh teach students of Persian language and literature about the life and works of Meer Syed Ali Hamdani. The article under consideration focuses attention on Meer Syed Ali Hamdani in Bangladesh, bringing to light the attributes of his great poetry so that it may get due recognition in the country. The writer of this article reaches the conclusion that Meer Syed Ali Hamdani enjoys much spiritual influence in Bangladesh.
