Impacts of Bible on the Narrations Relating to Prophets in Ibn Jarir’s Tarikh al-Umam wal-Muluk
Abstract
Abu Ja‘far Ibn Jarir al-Tabari was the master of all Islamic knowledge. He was
the author of many books. But Tarikh al-Umam wa al-Muluk and Jami‘alBayan fi Tafsir al-Quran became the cause of his fame. These two books
became the sources for upcoming authors. Incident of the past is the subject of
the Holy Quran. Because the incidents related to the prophets and their nations
have been mentioned in the Holy Quran as a lesson for Muslims. The incidents
related to the prophets have been mentioned briefly in the Holy Quran except
the incident of Hadrat Yusuf (AS), because the aim of the Holy Quran is to
provide lesson not to tell stories. The Bible has mentioned the incidents related
to the prophets and their nations in detail in the form of stories. So such events
have been attributed to the prophets whose appearance is not possible from
them. Imam al-Tabari also mentioned these events in his Tafsir and Tarikh. He
has attributed such fabricated narrations to the prophets which are against the
basic belief of the Muslims. Because, according to Muslims, all the prophets
are innocent. In this article, life of Imam Tabari and his methodology in Tarikh
al-Umam wa al-Muluk has been discussed. The fabricated narrations related to
the prophets have been narrated, their Isnad have been discussed and reviewed
rationally, and then exactly the same verses have been taken from the Bible to
prove that these narrations have been taken from the Bible. The aim of
criticizing these narrations is that scholars and public should not propagate
them without research.
