Abstract
Literal meaning of Naskh: Abrogation, replacement of one thing by another
thing.
Technical meaning: Lifting of law of Shari’ah by some other evidence of
Shari’ah.
Naasikh: That Ayat of the Qur’an which abrogates either recitation or
command or both of some other Ayat of the Qur’an.
Mansookh: That Ayat of the Qur’an which is abrogated.
Al-Qur’an says: “None of Our revelations do we abrogate or cancel to be
forgotten, but We substitute something better or similar. Knowest thou not that
Allah hath power over all things.” (2:106)
From the earliest days, scholars have written about Naskh. Among them were
Qatada bin Da'ama al-Sadousi, Abu Ubaid al-Qasim ibn Salam, Abu Dawood
al-Sijistani, Abu Jaafar al-Nahhas, Wahba Allah ibn Salama al-Dareer, Ibn alArabi, Ibn al-Jawzi, Ibn al-Anbari.
In his index, Ibn al Nadim (d.380/990) has listed 17 books on the subject that
were available at his time. The Daoudi lists in his book: Tabaqatul Mufassireen
names of thirty-four books in the science of abrogation, but most of those
books are missing today.
Many scholars wrote special books about abrogation in the Quran. The
important ones amongst them include:
Abu Ja’far al-Nahhās (d. 949), Kitāb al-nāsikh wal-mansūkh
Makkī b. Abū Tālib al-Qaisī (d. 1045) al-Īdāh li-nāsikh al-Qur'ān wamansūkhihi
Ibn Al-Jawzī(d. 597), Nawāsikh al-Qur-ān
This article aims to analyze the contents of the above mentioned books and to
discuss the critical methodology of the authors in these books of al- nasikh wal
mansookh.
