The status of Al-Mirqaat Al-Wafiyya by Fayrouz Abadi among the biographies of the Hanafi Scholars
Abstract
The idea of classifying people into different categories
emerged in ancient times, and the reason for this is to be careful
to know a person and his place among his peers. The scholars of
four Islamic sects got great attention of the historians and writers
of different classes when their biographies were written by the
classes of jurists in general, or by the classes of the sect they
represented.
Majd ud Din Abu Tahir Muhammad ibn Yaqub al-Fayrouz
Abadi (d.817AH) was one of the scholars of the eighth century
and an imam of linguistics, who published the sciences of
language and literature.
Although al- Fayrouz Abadi was of Shafei doctrine like the
most people of Shiraz yet he wrote "Al-Mirqat ul Wafiyya fi Tabakat al-Hanafiyya" for the scholars of Hanafi school. This book
is not written originally by al- Fayrouz Abadi but is a summary of
the work of Sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Qurashi, and is known as a
classical work of the Hanafi sect.
The author has outlined his method of arranging the data
in a few words present in the preface to the book, which may be
summed up as follows:
He adopted the alphabetical order to arrange the names of
scholars. Brevity is the predominant feature of this book. The work
bears accuracy and he mentions only what he is sure of because
sometimes he mentions only the of scholar. To this book, alFayrouz Abadi has added some biographies of Hanafi scholars
from the biographies of the book of Sheikh Abdul Qadir, “Al-Jwahir
ul Madiyya”.
