Characteristics of Elegiac Arabic poetry in Pakistan

Abstract
Arabic poetry became rich when certain poets began to exploit its different forms like “madah, hijja, rijz and rasa” to express their feelings. Arabic literature is rich with elegiac poetry since the pre-Islamic days. Elegy, the poetry of mourning, has been used by a number of sub-continental literary intellectuals. Their pieces of poetry are rich with the excellence of Arabic language. This article aims at giving a true picture of what are the major characteristics of Arabic elegy written in Pakistan. At its very outset, the origin of elegy writing is traced briefly. Then it proceeds to give the details of major topics of Arabic elegy in Pakistan. These topics are dealt with considering their importance as well as certain other aspects like their pragmatic, cosmic, scholastic and realistic approaches. The elegies written in Pakistan are of a wide range with respect to their topics.
