Abstract
Syed Abul Ala Maudoodi (1903-1979) had a multidimensional
personality. He was a philosopher, missionary, journalist and
politician. He produced literature on Islamic political thought and a
vast variety of other themes. His thoughts influenced individuals and
movements all over the world especially the Subcontinent, Egypt, Iran,
Afghanistan, Central Asia, Turkey, South East Asia and North Africa.
Some of his thoughts generated a debate among his followers and
opponents. One such area of his thoughts was his opinion about the
idea of creation of Pakistan in 1940’s. Although being a staunch
supporter of the Two-Nation Theory, he did not support the scheme of
All India Muslim League. He did present alternative options for solving
constitutional problem of the Indian Muslims, but his approach was not
fully understood. In this regard his followers adopted apologetic
approach thereby denying that Maudoodi opposed the idea of Pakistan.
It was a half-truth and by saying that they could not explain Mauddod’s
alternative proposals. The opponents of Maudoodi, on the other hand,
dubbed him as adversary to the idea of Pakistan and bracketed him
with other antagonists such as Abdul Ghafar Khan, Ulama of Deoband,
Khaksars etc. Did Mauddodi’s really oppose achieving of sovereign
state for the Muslims of India? What were the grounds for his
opposition to the scheme of All India Muslim League? Which
alternatives he presented for solution of constitutional problem of the
Indian Muslims? These and similar questions have been answered in
this paper.
