Gambling and its Contemporary Forms
Abstract
O believers! Wine and gambling and idols and divining arrows are
only unclean things, a work of devil (Satan) then save yourselves from them,
so that you may prosper
It is clear from the above verse of the Holy Quran that gambling is an absolute
forbidden act. Islamic scholars, jurists, and researchers, having deep
understanding and insight on the economic and financial matters, described
the existence of riba and gambling in prevalent transactions .
The paper is also intended to elaborate the views of Islamic intellectuals on
the matter. After discussing the concept of gambling (Qimar) and its types, the
paper proceeds to state the contemporary issues that consist of gambling. The
paper eloquently discussed and analyzed deeds like kite flying, pigeon flying,
video games, carom boards, lottery, scratch card, estate lottery, event scheme,
membership schemes for commercial companies, insurance schemes and
newspaper coupons of the refineries. The paper concludes that gambling, like
riba, is also a disease that serves as a slow poison for the society and leads to
the damages in both the worlds. It is, therefore, incumbent upon each Muslim
to keep himself from indulging in the gambling-based activities.
