Abstract
Ballads have prevailed in Sindhi culture since centuries.
They have their origin in collective aspirations and cravings of
masses. The current paper presents an overview of the ballads of
Sheikh Ayaz – a poet whose work is steeped in aesthetics and
carries intuitive qualities. His ballads have a magical quality that
mesmerizes his readers. Leaving the subject maner aside, one is
amazed his diction, reflecting imagination at its peak. While reading his folk ballads and folk lore one can feel his strong sense of
attachment with his native culture. He has not only used obsolete
words beautifully but has also fortified the tradition of using the
language of common man. His poetry is representative of the
Sindhi socio-cultural values that mirror typical Sindhi environment.
