Abstract
This research deals with the narration and the acquaintance of this specific hadith, and to show its problems and intellectuals' sayings in trying to solve these problems. Also, it aims to reflect the true understanding of this hadith; in that it was an exclusive permit for Salim, the freed-slave of Abu Hudhayfa. It is a mistake to appeal to this hadith in this issue, and then to generally validate it to all Muslims. The researcher adopted the analytical deductive approach, in order to conclude the following:
It is true without doubt that Adult's breastfeeding is not prohibited. What is prohibited is when this suckling takes place within the first two and a half years (or two years) of a child’s age. This is according to the majority (jumhur) of Muslims. The prohibited suckling is the one that satisfy child's hunger during the pre-weaning period, which is essential for his/her breeding. The hadith of Sayyida A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) about the breastfeeding of Salim, the freed-slave of Abu Hudhayfa, by Sahla bint Suhail, is an exclusive dispensation which does not apply to the rest of Muslims. Salim did not directly drink the milk from the breast of Sahla, rather, she would pour the milk in a utensil and he would drink from it. He did not look at or touch her breast.
