A Study on Geography Subject in Sindhi Language

Abstract
Geography as a field of learning has continue to hold special importance since ancient times because the relation between human beings and the earth is eternal, and the knowledge of earth is said to be ‘Geography’. As ancient books on history of Sind are written in Arabic and Persian, so the Geography of Sind is also written in those languages. Additionally, the books written in English on the Geography of Sind are in English language. When different writers began to write books on Geography in Sindhi in nineteenth century, the term “Dharti Nirwar (The Manifestation of Earth)” also came to be used for Geography in Sindhi. The article will try to expose that Geography subject was not promoted in Sind after independence because Geography is not taught now at schools like past times. Previously, the syllabus of class/grade One to Three contained books on Geography subject, which particularly contained the brief information of different talukas of Sind, but such books have disappeared altogether now. A very small number of students opts Geography at college level. Likewise, a few students opt to seek admission to Geography at university level. Over many past years, no book on Geography has been published in Sindhi. This article presents review of the printed material on Geography in Sindhi.
