The Prominent Linguistic Principles of Quranic Exegesis for Shiites

Abstract

This study elaborates some prominent principles adopted by the Shia School of thought for the interpretation of the Holy Qūrān. The research brings to light the roots and the basics of these principles. One of these principles is the correct pronunciation of the Quranic text. Another is to consider background and timings of its revelation. Third principle is to find out exact meanings of the text. Arabic dictionaries must, therefore, be considered as one of the basic source of the interpretations. For accurate understanding of various Arabic terminologies used in the Holy Qūrān, the contemporary illustrations must be taken into considerations also. Moreover, the context of the verses may not be ignored while interpreting any part of the Holy Book. This article also highlights the commonalities between the Shia and Sunni principles adopted for the explanation of Holy Qūrān
