Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of tranexamic acid in reducing blood loss in patient undergoing dynamic hip screw (DHS) surgery for intertrochanteric fracture. Methodology: In this randomized control trial, 120 patients undergoing DHS surgery between July 2015 to July 2017 were randomly divided into two groups (60 cases in each group); group A (intervention group: received 15mg/kg tranexamic acid), whereas group B (control group: given same dose of physiological saline). The age, weight, duration of fracture, height, pre-op and post-op hemoglobin and HCT and estimated blood loss were recorded and compared in two groups. Results: Preoperative and post hematocrit values were significantly different in two groups (p value 0.01 and 0.001, respectively). The mean estimated blood loss was 395.78±204 in group A and 427.8±146.9 in group B (p=0.001). Conclusion: Treatment with Tranexamic acid had decreased the blood loss during intertrochanteric hip fracture surgery.
