Abstract
Anthropology of Religion being an important sub-discipline of Anthropology (study of Humans) is the study of religion in relation to social institutions, impact and the comparison of religious beliefs and practices across cultures and societies. The interest in Anthropology of Islam has also been an integral part of the Anthropology since its inception. The study of Anthropology of Islam is different from the theological study of Islam as it does not discuss the scriptures and the beliefs, however, it does discuss how Islam affects the lives of the Muslims and how they act upon on it. The experts of Anthropology of Islam had discussed the various themes such as Diversity vs Unity, Hybridity, Conflict of Tradition and Modernity and status of women at length. Clifford Geertz, Ernest Gellner, Michael Gilsenan, Dale F. Eickleman, Abdul Hamid El Zein, Abu Lughod and Talal Asad’s works are the important ones in Anthropology of Islam and cover the most important debates and dimensions of the discipline.This article deals with an introduction on Anthropology, Anthropology of Religion and Various themes and approaches in Anthropology of Islam. It is an effort to get Islamic Studies scholars familiarize with the discipline and encourage them to focus their research in this somehow neglected area.
