The Status of Zakat Collectors of Madaris in the Context of Quranic term Al ‘Aamileena ‘Alaiha: An Analytical Study
Abstract
Zakat is one of the pillars of Islam. Almighty Allah has outlined the eight recipients of Zakat in Surah At-Taubah, verse 60. These are the only people who qualify to receive Zakat. One of them is Al ‘Aamileena ‘Alaiha. It refers to the people who are appointed by the Head of the Islamic State to collect Zakat. However, the status of Al ‘Aamileena ‘Alaiha is debatable among the Muslim jurists, ‘Ulama and contemporary scholars. Some accept them to be eligible to receive Zakat, while others deny their eligibility to own Zakat money. This article deals with the distribution of Zakat to Al ‘Aamileena ‘Alaiha. Besides the literal explanation of the term, the article discusses the respective comments by the renowned scholars and survey methodology is also applied to the discourse for a comprehensive and authentic discretion. The research addresses the legal status of various practices at present and issues of the institutions that are involved in the collection of Zakat. Zakat is the major source of revenue needed to generate support for the nation’s widows, orphans and the poor. It also strengthens the Islamic community at large and it adds to society’s wealth and helps in the creation of a means of earning for the destitute and needy. Al ‘Aamileen has a significant role in the collection of Zakat from the society by social-religious organizations, Madaris, welfare organizations and other institutions. Therefore, a thorough jurisprudence and legal detail about Al ‘Aamileen is presented in the article so that Zakat collecting institutions can facilitate them well and avoid any misconduct in this concern.
