Tradition of Annotations in Sīrah Literature: An Analytical Study
Abstract
In Islamic literature, the term “Tanbīh” refers to chastise, to reproof, to admonish, to warn, to alert, to chasten, to correct, to annotate and likewise. ‘Tanbīh’ in context of last meaning (Annotation), has substantial significance as far as primary sources of Shar‘īah are concerned. This locution is used to draw the attention of the readers towards some important aspects related to the topic under the headings of “Tanbīh” or “Tanbīhāt”. The said methodology is adopted in many sīrah books. While describing the sīrah incidents, the sīrah writers have derived hundreds and thousands of Tanbihāt related to Tafsīr, ‘Ilm al-Kalām, Ḥadith, Mysticism, Poetry, Arabic literature and other branches of knowledge. This style is much useful and the essence of sīrah literature. This research paper attempts to highlight the said mode of sīrah writing. The article deals with the multiple meanings of the term ‘Tanbih’ derived from the authentic sources. Describing the meanings, the study presents examples from the literature as well to elaborate the concepts more clearly. References of many sīrah books of the basic sources of Islamic literature are cited along with quotes and comments of renowned scholars to bring comprehensiveness in the description. The article concludes itself with the derived implications of the term ‘Tanbīh’ after thorough research discussed and presented in the article. This study is highly significant for all those readers, scholars and the researchers who have a keen interest in sīrah.
