Abstract
This article is about Bri•tish rife in Punjab. It covers the changes which British brought in
Punjab. The Punjabi appreciated British reforms in agriculture sector. The digging of canal and
spreading it net between doaba's changed the life style of people. The people who were nomads and
used to raise cattle, goats and sheep's settled in vast land of Punjab and started cultivation.
The. transport facilities specially the trains helped in efficient transportation of raw material
from fields to markets and foreign lands.
In education .sector British introduced normal education. ’The indigenous education system wa.s
based moFe on self help basis. It required more initiative on both sides that was teacher nnd
taught. It was not commercial as education became after British take over. According to G.W Leitner
in his book History of Indigenous Education in the Punjab Since Annexation and in 1882, he narrates
that literacy rate in Punjab was cent pert'ent before their (British) arrival. The British
educ'ation policy destroyed the self-learning proces.s in Punjab.
However British were appreciated by Punjabis' for creating jobs in armed forces, the Punjabi's
proved their loyalty in serving British and in stabilizing their rule in India during 1857 war of
independence
This article initiates further study of British rule in Punjab to determine how jar Punjab gained
from British rule and where they i'osl their own fine values based education. Only further and
in-depth study can give true picture of this important factor.
