Abstract
Background:Renalstonediseaseisaverycommonmedicalproblemingeneralpopulation.Aswithinventofnewertherapeuticmodalities,ESWLisalreadylosingitspopularity.Butwebelieveitasaneffectivewayoftreatingrenal stones. ThisstudywasconductedtoevaluateanyimprovementinsuccessrateofESWLtherapyfortreatingrenalstoneswithlatestshockwavelithotripsymachines.Methods:StudyconductedfromJune2016untilNovember2017inAlkhorhospital,HamadMedicalCorporation,Qatar.All patients undergoing ESWL for renal stones in mentioned period were included.Total197patientsunderwentESWLusingnewermachines.Factorsalreadystudiedtoaffectthesuccessratelikestonesize,location,consistency(measuredbyHounsfieldunitsonCT),presenceofstentweretakeninconsideration.Afteraperiodof3monthseithercompletestoneclearanceorstonefragmentssmallerthan4mmwereconsideredasatreatmentsuccess.Theseresultswerecomparedtotheresultsfromliterature.Results:Patientswerefolloweduntil3 monthsaftertreatment.170patients(86.29%)hadcompletestoneclearance.Eleven patients(5.58%)hadresidualstonelessthan4 mm,thusachievinganoverallsuccessof181patients(91.88%).42patients(21.32%)neededrepeatsessionofESWLwithamaximumnumberof3sessions.16patient’s(8.12%)requiredauxiliaryprocedureslikeflexibleureteroscopy.Post-ESWLcomplicationswererecordedin12 patients(6.09%).Successratewasaffectedmainlybystonesizewithnegligibleeffectofstonelocation.Presenceofstentaffectedthe numberofsessionsbuthasnoimpactonstoneclearance.Conclusion:Althoughthestonesizeandtoanegligibleextent,thestonelocationandpresenceofstentmayaffectthestoneclearance,neverthelessasignificantimprovementinsuccessratehasbeenobservedbyuseofnewshockwavelithotripsymachines.
