Abstract
This article introduces the letters of Prof. Maulavi Muhammad Shafi, the
founding chairman of the editorial board of the Urdu Encyclopedia of Islam.
The project of the Urdu Encyclopedia of Islam was launched in 1950. For its
compilation, along with a national editorial board, a foreign editorial board was
constituted and the responsibility was assigned to Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah,
then residing in Paris. As a result, an extensive correspondence between Prof.
Shafi and Dr. Hamidullah took place. In this article, 25 letters are included. The
letters of Prof. Shafi's are quite interesting, as they shed light on the daunting
and tremendous task of the compilation of Urdu Encyclopedia of Islam. This
collection of letters also shed light on the highly remarkable contribution of Dr.
Muhammad Hamidullah, to the Urdu Encyclopedia of Islam.
