Abstract
There have been two kinds of opinions since debate regarding Post-modernism
or theory took roots in Urdu. On one hand, there are writers who say that these
post-modernist theories are new and enriching for Urdu literature, while on the
other hand some writers claim that post-modernism and all other theories of
criticism influenced by it were already there in Urdu. Not a single of these
theories is new and the West is just selling old wines to the East in new bottles.
Some even claimed that the West is selling back our own theories branding them
as theirs. Such claims have been presented by both the sides but to date no
substantial proof has been provided by either of them. People who claim that
these theories are new have only published books on debates about the theory,
but the original literary writings were not acknowledged in these books. On the
other hand, there are those critics who claim that all these structuralist and
post-structuralist theories which are proclaimed as new have already been there
in our literature. I attended to this issue and started identifying modern and
post-modern theories from the writings of Kaleemuddin Ahmed. It would be
interesting to note that I was able to find about all the modern critical theories in
his writings. With the help of textual evidences, this article shows the presence
of modernist and postmodernist strands in Ahmed's works.
