Abstract
In this research paper, the technical, cultural and intellectual aspects of "Umrao
Jan Ada" have been discussed. The narrative technique of Mirza Hadi Ruswa's
innovative, bold and trendsetting novel, written in the nineteenth century, is
analyzed to know how a sick society has impacted on its individuals. It is also
clarified that the way the novelist portrayed a whore to depict the nineteenth
century Lucknow is not a Feminist quest, and not a lapse in craft. Though this
masterpiece is being critically studied for the last one hundred and sixteen years
in different ways, but in this paper, for the very first time, the symbolic and
ironic representation is evaluated as a narrative of supposed and true realities. It
attempts to assess the way the novelist frequently satirizes the unreal concepts of
his society, human flexibilities in certain conditions and cultural dimensions to
denote its literary contribution to Urdu fiction.
