Abstract
This article discusses an important device of Urdu poetry which is
called "ta'alli" (expression of pride). Such a quality of poetry has also been
termed as "tasleef" in Rhetoric. The present article discusses the use of this
poetic device as practiced by the poets of Delhi belonging to different
periods. The poets of Delhi have employed the device of "ta'alli" for
enhancing the qualities of form and content in their poetry. Such use is
found in almost all forms of poetry tried by them. What is remarkable is
that with each genre of poetry, the device has been used differently. The
present article covers the use of this device in the poetry of Meer, Sauda,
Dard, Qaim, Meer Hasan, Nazeer, Shah Naseer, Zauq, Momin, Shaifta and
Ghalib. It also provides useful suggestions for research from their poetry.
