The critique scholars of ilm e rijal intend from their search and criticism upon the
narrators of hadith to ensure actual and accurate status of their memory capability )ضبط)
and piety/honesty level )عدالة ,)so they can issue ruling on their transmitted narratives
whether they are authentic or not.
To complete this procedure, they used a number of methods. One of them and
most famous is the logical criticism of the text of hadith. It does not mean that logic is
the super standard or the basic criterion for the acceptance of shariah, but it does prove
that whatever has been approved by shariah can’t be contradictory to the logic away
from personal desires and temptations. Whenever a hadith attributed to the Holy
Prophet contains such stuff which contradicts to the logic, it indicates that this hadith
needs more verifications for its acceptance.
What must be emphasized here is that the logical criticism for the text of hadith
does not mean to refuse what was acceptable from hadith without any reason and
bothering to probe its authenticity, or reject what belongs to the unseen facts )الغيب أخبار)
from narratives, but it intends to disapprove those narrative which oppose the logic
clearly as remain there no way to find any reconciliation or solution about it.
The Holy Prophet’s companion’s argument among each other about hadith also
reflects that they have considered logical criticism a valid source to probe a hadith like
Ibn eAbbas and Aysha )عنهما اهلل رضي .)That’s why we see lot of traditionalist they do not
accept what clearly opposes the logic from narratives just like imam Shuba.
According to the above mentioned, we can state that the logical criticism of the
texts was being considered and applied by traditionalist in their criticism upon
narratives, not what is said by their opponents and who followed them to adapt
assumptions blindly. There is detailed discussion in this article about this issue.
