This research aimed at investigating the determinants of divergent behavior leading to dropout of public primary schools children. Data were collected using questionnaires and interview protocols from all categories of people linked directly or indirectly with the dropouts. Poverty, the most family factor, was found as the major determinant of students‟ divergent behavior leading to drop out. Corollary factors were engagement of children in work with parents, learning vocational skills as apprentice or looking after the domestic affairs. Added to poverty was the lack of parents‟ interest in educating their children and dropouts‟ personal factors which included their more interest in playing and lack of interest and weakness in studies. All these factors interrelate to create a dropout syndrome. School environment lacking child friendliness was also found to be one of the factors causing dropout.
