Arabic Literature: An Overview of Poetry of Jahliyyah Period
Abstract
Muslim Religious Scholars have given the name to pre commencement of
prophethood period in Arabian literature as a period of heathenism or paganism but at
the same time we learn that seven great eulogies were hanging in the sacred house in
Mecca which is attributed to House of God.However great Arab Scholar Taha
Hussain(1889-1973) rejected the authencity of these larger poems and called a
fiction.However several books and articles have claimed and appreciated these as
great pieces of poetry.
In Urdu literary world credit goes to Muhammad Kazim((1926-2014) who
contributed a serial of articles in a prgressive literary Journal "Fanoon"[editor: Ahmad
Nadeem Qasimi]highlighting the salient features of poets and poetry with
examples.PhD scholar Nazia Rahat has completed her doctoral thesis under the
guidance of Dr.Anwaar Ahmad and Dr.Rubina Tareen based upon the comparative
study of Muhmmad Kazim and Professor Khursheed Rizvi(1942)regarding
introduction of Arabic Literature to the world of Urdu.
