Abstract
Objective: To compare the anti-emetic effect of patients in CDD (combined dexamethasone pre-operatively administered combination of dimenhydrinate) group and 44 patients in D dexamethasone and dimenhydrinate versus (dimenhydrinate only) group. Asymptomatic dimenhydrinate only on post-operative nausea cases were observed in 45.4% of the CDD group and vomiting in patients undergoing open while only 15.9% of the D group had asymptoappendectomy. matic cases at 0-5 hours post-operatively Methodology: In this double-blinded randomized (p=0.006). Regarding nausea, 50% patients from parallel group study, 90 patients undergoing open CDD group and 81.8% from D group experienced appendectomy were selected. Group I, received a some degree of post-operative nausea (p=0.002); combination of 8mg dexamethasone and 50mg 22.7% patients from CDD group and 54.5% from D dimenhydrinate pre-operatively and the group II group also experienced 1 or more than 1 episodes received 50mg dimenhydrinate only. Patients and of vomiting during this time interval (p=0.002). observing researcher were completely blinded to Conclusion: Pre-operative administration of a the treatment protocol given pre-operatively. The combination of 8mg intravenous dexamethasone pharmacological variables of anesthesia were and 50mg intravenous dimenhydrinate resulted in kept at a near constant level for all the subjects. statistically significant lower incidence of postNausea and vomiting were assessed at 0-5 hours operative nausea and vomiting at 0-5 hours postpost- operatively. operatively in patients undergoing open Results: After excluding the patients with per- appendectomy.
