Abstract

Professor Dr. Bint Ash-Shati’ is one of the eminent figures of the modern era, who did a lot in the field of Quranic and literary studies and made strenuous efforts. She is truly a unique gem for her great works, remarkable achievements and rich contribution.The Professor grew up in a pious environment and fertile soil, and found a suitable internal environment as her father was a great Islamic scholar, and she was married to Mr. Amin Al-Khouli, and both of them have obvious effects and clear imprints on her personality, behavior and style. Bint Ash-Shati’ had a strong personality since her childhood. She was distinguished by the deep study of Islamic and Arabic sciences. She was a prolific writer with more than forty books, most of which revolve around Quranic studies and the secrets of the Arabic language.Bint Ash-Shati’ took the inductive approach in describing the subtleties of particles, by mentioning the text of the Qur’an, then comparing, studying and reaching evident facts in a way that every particle takes its specific place and carries specific rhetorical meanings, and there is no particle or word which can be replaced by other particle or word and lead to the same meaning, and this is the miracle of the Holy Quran.The rhetorical approach of Bint Ash-Shati’ is characterized by a number of merits, including: the connotative study of the Quranic letter and word, and the choice of words of the Holy Quran is not for the sake of words, but they were chosen for the sake of meaning, and to shift the person from the palpable to the impalpable.The Professor also resolved the issue of synonyms in the Holy Quran. She is of the view that the Quranic words are used for specific connotations in a specific context which cannot be expressed by any other word in the meaning for which that word was used.She declared the study of social, political and environmental conditions a prerequisite condition for the understanding of the Holy Quran. She prefers the objective exegesis over the partial exegesis to reach the desired goal.She added valuable contributions to the topic of abbreviated letters (Muqatta’t), and carried out a thorough study, reading with fruitful and convincing conclusions.The summary of her method is: to understand the miraculous text of the Holy Quran in the light of the spirit and nature of the Arabic language, and to minutely pursue the words of the Holy Quran, and to vigilantly ponder over their connotations in the light of its context, and to contemplatively listen to the inspirations of the Quranic expression. She chose strict rules to implement the method i.e. examining the Qranic words at all places to reach their connotation, and to present the stylistic phenomena of their examples in the Holy Quran, and to ponder over its special context in the verse and the Surah, and then its general context throughout the Holy Quran in search of its rhetoric and figurative subtleties. This is just the tip of the Iceberg and a drop of the sea from the rhetorical approach of Bint Ash-Shati’. We ask Allah Almighty to make this humble effort useful for the students of knowledge, and accept it on the Day of Judgment. Ameen.
