Abstract
In course of exploring some of the issues, This essay attempts to trace the tedious process of the establishment of the Delhi College, its complex trajectory and the formal introduction of English education. It examines the modern curriculum of the college, foregrounds the scientific atmosphere of the institution, and underscores the rational effect of education on its students. A brief mention is also made of the extra-curricular activities which were responsible, to some extent, for their political socialisation. Besides, it delineates the trajectory of their post-college careers and public lives in order to understand the beneficiality of English education and the values the colonial dispensation sought to inculcate through such education in Delhi. The paper also briefly touches upon the manifestation of cultural-religious prejudices in the college, the antagonism of a section of the conservative forces towards English education, and how the students suffered social ostracism from their respective communities. The role of English education in the making of the liberal mentality is the focus of this essay.
