Abstract
This article discusses the symbol of Lakshman Rekha in fiction by Pakistani
women writers. Lakshman Rekha is the threshold between a woman's home and
man's world that cannot be crossed. Hindu Mythology introduces us to the
symbol of crossing Lakshman Rekha as an intentional act by women. This act of
exercising one's own will is not considered to be appropriate in context of
women. This research gives an analysis of intentionally and unintentionally
crossing the threshold as depicted in fiction. This research takes into account
fiction written by Pakistani women writers. It is evident through this study that
women writers have elaborated the age-old context where a woman's crossing of
the threshold marked as Lakshman Rekha intentionally or unintentionally, is a
bad symbol for both home and society.
