Abstract
Emile Zola (France) and Mirza Hadi Ruswa (Subcontinent) were famous
contemporary novelists. They both have so many cultural and social
similarities. Nana by Zola and Umrao Jan Ada by Ruswa are two
acclaimed novels. Liberal and colorful society of France and Lukhnow is
the main theme of these novels. Specially so called moral values and
double standards of the society are beautifully reflected. They potray the
true picture of male chauvinism and male psyche. We can say that these
novels are good psychoanalysis of that era. This article shows how Zola
and Ruswa have depicted the downfall of moral values and double
standards of the civilized society of France and Lukhnow through their
characters.
