Abstract
Khwaja Altaf Husain Haali's book: Hayat e Sa'adi is considered to be the first
sound biography in Urdu literature. For Haali, the biographies of the legendary
personalities serve as best source of inspiration for the future generation.
Though he admits the prevalence of shortcomings, not forgetting the
characteristics of biographical works, he hardly takes care of it in his own
works. Besides giving a deliberation of his early life, educational pursuits,
travel, etc., Haali projects Sa'adi as a great scholar, unparalleled orator, moral
benefactor, and a great Sufi and demarcates the impact of socio-cultural
ambience on the development of his personality. As a critique, of prose and
poetry, Haali besides eulogizing Sa'adi as an unconventional prolific writer,
distinctive and proficient poet, considers him at par with Firdousi in the field oh
Mathnavi writing in certain aspects. Regardless of certain literary shortcomings,
this biography, with respect to its art, language and style, occupies a novel space
in Urdu literature that exercised considerable influence on the later biographical
narrations.
