Abstract
The tradtition of "Urdu Tadveen e Matn" has its roots in the rich and
flourishing history of Tadveen in Arabic and Persian. In Particular it drives
its principals and rules from the Tadveen of Quran and Hadees. However it
got its founding from English sources also. Urdu Tadveen e Matn started
from the beginning of 20th Century. Hafiz Mehmood Shirani was its first
proponent. Then it spread throughout India to different centres of learning.
Dr. Azmat Rubab in her dissertation points out such 12 centers of
Tadveen e Matn throughout the length and breadth of India and Pakistan.
Prominent among these are Deccan, Lahore, Delhi, Karachi, and Raam Pur
etc. where learned scholars carried out Tadveen of important manuscripts
and texts.
One such center is Deccan where scholars tried to preserve the
manuscripts of these old poets and writers who belonged to Deccan. One of
the great early poets of Deccan was Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutab Shah.
He wrote a large variety of verses. First scholar to edit his Kuliyat was Dr.
Mohi Ud Deen Qadri Zor. Later on, after some 40 years, Dr. Syyada Jafer
again edited His Kuliyat. Both these works are of great value. Here Dr.
Azmat Rubab compares the two efforts of the scholars and brings out the
identities and differences between the two compilations.
