There are two basic categories of literature i.e. prose and poetry. The poetic reflections are characterized by the rhymes while prose is free from restrictions. By the passage of time some genres of Arabic prose became extinct or transformed and there have emerged new ramifications like novel, short story, drama and article. Nevertheless, both of poetry and prose are basic modes of expression for human reflections and sentiments, providing substance for the imposing literary parlance. These are the origin of sweet waters that quench the thirst of knowledge since generations, submitting overtures of unprecedented ideas by provoking elegant emotions, sentiments and sensations. This research paper deals with the development and growth of Arabic prose during pre-Islamic, Islamic and Umayyad periods. In this paper it has been tried to elaborate that Arabic prose, witnessed many ups and downs since the ancient times and this is manifested by different prevailing styles, genres and types.
