Da’wah or preaching is an important and effective
means for the development and propagation of Islam.
Through da’wah, the believers become steadfast on their
religion, the non-believers enter into Islam while those
sincerely attached to it reach higher spiritual and religious
ranks.
The responsibility of da’wa was first of all
undertaken by the Prophets May peace and blessings be
upon them. They were the ones selected for this sublime
duty by sending them as messengers to human beings. After
the closure of the gate of prophet-hood, this responsibility
was performed by their true successors who performed this
obligation by becoming the personification of knowledge
and practice and an embodiment of sincerity and
truthfulness.
The responsibility of da’wah has been made an
obligation upon all the Muslim in general and a subset of
them in particular. Similarly, it has been made a duty upon
each individual and class of Muslims according to their
status. The leaders, the scholars (ulama’) and the general
masses are all answerable for this assignment in line with
their domain of influence and authority. Consequently, it
demands a dynamic caution, balance and seriousness all
the time. It has its own limits and boundaries, features and
characteristics as well as instructions pertaining to
knowledge and practice. Similarly, the addressee and
situational aspects should also be taken into consideration.
Additionally, if the ideological, intellectual and knowledge
level of the addressee as well as the proper time and
occasion for da’wah are taken into account, it will enhance
its fruitful results. On the contrary, its outcome may not be
very encouraging, and even negative at times, if these
factors are ignored. Therefore, this article discusses those
aspects of preaching which are related to the situation of
