Arabia during era of third caliph of the Muslim Hazrat Umar (RA) fell in severe
drought followed by famine and economic crisis which wreaked havoc and crippled life of
human being and livestock. Quoting his father while narrating fallout and plight of people
during this critical hour, Hizam bin Hisham says as people returned from Hajj in 18 AD they
experienced hardships; animals were dying as there was nothing for them to graze upon. As
such there was no cultivation which led to led to serious famine and markets went dry as
there no grain and other commodities disappeared from markets. People started dying and
they had to fell back on decayed and decomposed bones of dead animals for consumption to
stay alive. Fearing being killed, wild animals would come to human being for shelter and
when one used to slaughter any sacrificial animal like goat, no blood would come out for
being hydrated as a result of hunger. This crisis is known as Ramdah in history. But Hazrat
Umar (RA) remained steadfast and prudently steered out his rule from this economic quagmire,
presenting an ideal model for rulers in history. He showed high sense of responsibility for being
a greater ruler over Arabia and the same can be gauged from the fact when he would say that he
feared that Allah would ask him about rights of my animals. Once Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA),
said, “If a camel under my care dies on the banks of the Euphrates, I would expect Allah the
Exalted to question me about it on the Day of Resurrection.” When this was the case of your
sense of livestock, what would be the knowledge of responsibility for your contemporary human
being? During the current day, Islam is passing through a delicate phase and there is a crisis in
everywhere: poverty is rampant, hitting badly the people in the developing countries especially
the Muslim ones where people have been subjected to mal-treatment and discrimination. There
as a deep division between the poor and the rich class in society- where the rich is living luxury
life, enjoying perks and privileges at the cost of the former segment that is only meant to engage
in hard work and intense labor. Therefore, those who are to rule country should be person of
high integrity and be well-trained to perform their duties with full knowledge, expertise, loyalty
and patience in the manner in which Hazrat Umar (RA).This Article will throw light on Ramdah
crisis and high sense of responsibility, prudently of Hazrat Umar(RA).
